Discover the story behind Tolerance, founded in 2024 to support people living with histamine intolerance. Learn how Tolerance is building a trusted platform through DAO enzyme supplements, expert dietitian support, low histamine resources, genetic testing and a growing commitment to helping people live with greater food freedom.
Andrew Sears and Sean Golding had both seen first-hand the impact of histamine intolerance, and the challenge that people face in finding consistent, reliable information and support. The lack of NHS support for people with histamine intolerance has meant that awareness remains low, and people need to be lucky to end up working with one of the few dedicated expert practitioners in the space. It was out of this that, in late 2024, Tolerance was born.
Starting with the launch of Aperitif, their premium diamine oxidase (DAO) enzyme supplements, Tolerance have set about changing that, building the UK’s only dedicated platform for the discovery and management of histamine intolerance.
Aperitif is a high-strength DAO enzyme supplement designed to be taken before histamine-rich food and drink. It supplements the DAO found naturally in the body, helping to break down higher levels of histamine found in a wide range of food and drink including meat, cheese, wine, many fruit and vegetables, and fermented products. Each capsule delivers 48,000 histamine degrading units (HDU) alongside 12mg of vitamin C, an essential DAO cofactor, in a delayed release capsule that delivers the enzyme directly to the intestines where it is needed.
Since launching, Tolerance has looked for ways to support people at all stages of their histamine intolerance journey. They have partnered with some of the best histamine intolerance nutritional experts in the UK, ensuring that any of their customers have access to vetted, independent guidance to help them get to the bottom of their triggers and help implementing management protocols. Working with these experts, they have launched an open source, low histamine food list, which they are constantly refining with practitioner support alongside the latest science.
Most recently, Tolerance has partnered with Lifecode Gx to help those still trying to understand their symptoms have easier access to nutrigenomics and genetic testing. The first report looks at the seven genes that make up the histamine clearance pathway, helping customers identify potential underlying root causes for their reactions. Alongside this they also offer a broader report looking at wider nutritional health. 27 genes covering a range of nutritional and food response markers including lactose, coeliac, caffeine and methylation pathways.
For Tolerance, the journey doesn’t stop there. Off the back of focus groups with both customers and non-customers alike, Tolerance have a range of exciting new initiatives coming up over the next 12-24 months, all designed to help people managing a histamine or food intolerance have a healthier relationship with their diets, and say yes to more of the food and drink they love.
