Beyond Estrogen: A Multi-Pathway Approach to Women’s Hormonal Health

This blog by Healthgevity explores a multi-pathway approach to women’s hormonal health, from PMS and PCOS through perimenopause and menopause, covering endocrine, gut, mood, sleep and metabolic pathways. Discover how HERgevity™ Balance supports these interconnected pathways with a non-hormonal, evidence-informed formula.

Why supporting multiple interconnected pathways may offer a more complete approach from PMS through menopause

Women’s hormonal health is rarely a single-hormone problem. So why are so many non-hormonal formulas built around a single pathway?

Across the reproductive years, perimenopause, and menopause, endocrine signaling, the gut environment, mood, sleep, and metabolic health continually interact. A patient experiencing changes in cycle regularity, vasomotor symptoms, mood, or overall well-being may therefore benefit from a broader strategy than focusing exclusively on estrogen.

This systems-based perspective is the foundation of HERgevity™ Balance by Healthgevity®, a non-hormonal, multi-pathway formula designed to support complementary pathways involved in women’s hormonal health.

Targeted Support During the Menopausal Transition

MENOFELIS®, a standardized Rheum rhaponticum root extract (ERr 731), provides one of the most clinically established components of the formula.

MENOFELIS® has been evaluated across multiple clinical studies in perimenopausal and menopausal women, with research reporting improvements in menopausal symptoms, anxiety, general well-being, and quality-of-life measures.¹⁻³ A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis further evaluated its efficacy for menopausal symptoms.⁴

Importantly, safety has also been evaluated. A 2025 study examining MENOFELIS® prescriptions and subsequent breast cancer found no association between MENOFELIS® use and an increased risk of breast cancer.⁵ For practitioners evaluating non-hormonal approaches to menopausal support, this adds an important dimension to the ingredient’s growing body of clinical evidence.

Rather than approaching menopause solely by supplying exogenous hormones, MENOFELIS® provides practitioners with a well-studied botanical option for non-hormonal menopausal support.

Endocrine Support Across Different Life Stages

Women’s hormonal needs can look dramatically different during the reproductive years, PCOS/PMOS, perimenopause, and menopause.

Xeya™ Modern Shatavari, a standardized Asparagus racemosus root extract, brings a broader endocrine dimension to the formula.

In a 2025 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, standardized Shatavari supplementation was associated with improvements in hormonal balance, menstrual health, and vasomotor symptoms in perimenopausal women.⁶

A separate randomized controlled trial in women with PCOS reported improvements in ovarian morphology, menstrual regularity, and metabolic parameters.⁷

Together, these findings make Shatavari particularly interesting for a formula designed to support women across multiple stages of hormonal transition.

The Gut–Hormone Connection

The gut is increasingly recognized as an important component of systemic and hormonal health.

PoZibio®, a heat-treated Lacticaseibacillus paracasei D3.5 postbiotic, introduces a gut-barrier component rarely addressed in conventional women’s hormone formulas.

Preclinical research on heat-killed L. paracasei D3.5 demonstrated improvements in age-related intestinal barrier dysfunction and inflammatory signaling.⁸ Broader postbiotic research also highlights potential roles for microbial-derived compounds in supporting intestinal barrier integrity and host physiology.⁹

For practitioners, this creates an opportunity to think beyond the ovaries and consider the intestinal environment as part of a more comprehensive approach to women’s health.

Mood and Neuroendocrine Health

Hormonal transitions frequently extend beyond physical symptoms to changes in mood, stress resilience, and sleep.

Affron®, a standardized saffron extract, has been investigated specifically in perimenopausal women. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, affron® supplementation was associated with improvements in psychological symptoms related to menopause.¹⁰ Additional randomized research has demonstrated benefits for mood and emotional well-being in adults.¹¹

This provides an important neuroendocrine dimension to a formula designed for the whole patient—not simply her hormone levels.

Completing the Multi-Pathway Strategy

AstraGin® and Ioniplex® provide additional nutrient-utilization and mineral support, complementing the primary bioactive ingredients.

The result is a broader clinical framework:

Endocrine signaling → Menopausal support → Gut-barrier health → Mood & neuroendocrine health → Nutrient utilization

HERgevity™ Balance is not intended to replace hormone replacement therapy when HRT is clinically indicated. Instead, it provides practitioners with a non-hormonal, multi-pathway option for women whose needs extend beyond a single hormone or symptom.

Because women’s hormonal health is interconnected—and the nutritional strategy supporting it should be as well.
