First, Do No Harm: Antimicrobial Herbs and the Gut Microbiome

With Hannah Braye from Invivo Healthcare

Many clients assume that the presence of a gut pathogen will explain digestive symptoms — but the picture is usually far more complex. While infections can certainly play a role, we now understand that gut-related issues are often driven by multiple interacting factors within the wider microbiome ecosystem. As clinicians, it’s crucial to know how to manage pathogens and pathobionts responsibly to avoid potentially disrupting the delicate microbial balance we aim to protect.

In this one-hour live session, Hannah explores how to take a balanced, evidence-informed approach to microbial management and antimicrobial use.

You’ll learn:

  • How metagenomic and gastrointestinal testing can provide a holistic view of gut health
  • The key differences between pathogens and pathobionts — and their appropriate management strategies
  • The impact of antimicrobial herbs on the broader gut microbiome
  • When eradication of a pathogen and referral for medical treatment is warranted
  • How to determine if antimicrobial use is appropriate — or if supporting microbial diversity is the better approach
  • Best practices for protecting and rebuilding the gut microbiome during and after antimicrobial therapy
  • Alternative strategies for managing pathogens and pathobionts safely and effectively
