Lactobacillus rhamnosus - Perhaps one of the most prominent Lactobacillus bacteria in the gut, research states L. rhamnosus supports a strong respiratory systemhelps keep inflammation in check, and encourages a healthy intestinal lining.*1 It has also been used in protocols for children and adults with diarrhea.*2

Lactobacillus acidophilus – L. acidophilus is one of the most common probiotic in supplements and foods like yogurt. It produces lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide that some troublesome bacteria don't like. By doing so, it seems to help keep the community of microbes in your intestines healthy and balanced. Clinical research has linked L. acidophilus to keeping the urogenital tract healthy and to supporting immune system strength.* One clinical study showed L. acidophilus helped schoolchildren make it through the winter with less absences.*3

Lactobacillus plantarum - No less than four clinical trials have shown that L. plantarum helps support comfortable digestion – helping to minimize gas, bloating, and abdominal pain.*4 One of the most common probiotics, L. plantarum seems to help regulate your immune response, reducing inflammation in the body*. Lactobacillus paracasei - L. paracasei have been shown to support comfortable digestion in a number of ways, including by helping to regulate inflammation. It's also been linked to healthy cholesterol levels, healthy blood pressure and a balanced, strong immune system.*8

In a 2014 study on 34 healthy individuals, researchers found that supplementing with L. paracasei not only added this helpful bacteria to your intestine . . . but also seemed to shift the composition of the microbial population overall in their intestines. L. paracasei seemed to move the entire microbiome towards species associated with good health.*9

Lactobacillus gasseri - L. gasseri has been shown in at least two clinical trials to help people lose weight. In a 2013 trial published in the British Journal of Nutritionparticipants who supplemented with L. gasseri lost at least 8% of their abdominal fat over the course of 12 weeks.*10 Research is still ongoing on the exact mechanism, but it seems L. gasseri interferes with fat absorption.11 Preliminary research indicates that L. gasseri may inhibit inflammation signaling at the genetic level!*12

Lactobacillus salivarius - Several clinical trials on both adults and children indicate that L. salivarius seems to help regulate the immune system and - as a result - support healthy skin.*14 It's also been researched for potential support in keeping the vagina healthy and comfortable.*15 L. salivarius also seems to play a distinct role in keeping the microbial population in your mouth healthy. *16

Lactobacillus brevis – First isolated from a traditional Japanese pickle, L. brevis is found in many fermented foods. Dr. David Perlmutter, author of Brain Maker, considers it one of the core probiotics we all need for good health. He points out that it seems to support healthy brain growth by increasing production of the brain growth hormone, BDNF17 Clinical research suggests it also helps with intestinal health and immune strength.* Preliminary research indicates it can trigger an increase in production of interferon in the body and enhance activity of killer T cells.18 One large-scale clinical study showed it seemed to make a significant difference in keeping children healthy over the winter season.*19 Some clinical research also suggests it can help support vaginal comfort and health by adhering to vaginal walls and making it an unfriendly environment for more troublesome microbes.*20

Bifidobacterium infantis – B. infantis is the primary microbe in infant guts. It seems to play a critical role in establishing a healthy intestinal lining and a strong and well-regulated immune system.*21 But its work doesn't end with infancy. Research has also linked it to helping mitigate inflammation in the digestive system and throughout the body.* In three different studies, B. infantis seemed to reduce the production of inflammatory cytokines, signaling the immune system to cool off.*22 When it comes to your brain, B. infantis also plays a role. Research suggests B. infantis regulates the production of tryptophan which is the precursor for serotonin.Serotonin is the neurotransmitter associated with a sense of satisfaction and happiness. *23

Bifidobacterium breve - B. breve has been linked to helping with childhood constipation.*24 And when combined with a gluten-free diet, B. breve can help restore microbial balance in the digestive tract of children who have experienced some intestinal inflammation.*25 B. Breve seems to play a particular role in helping to establish a healthy microbiome . . . A few clinical trials involving pre-term babies demonstrate it works particularly well in getting their gut back in shape. 26 Clinical research suggests this special bacterium is particularly effective in recolonizing the gut of children who have undergone chemotherapy.*27 The children who took this probiotic seemed to recover better from the treatment without any complications that are usually associated with chemotherapy.

Bifidobacterium longum - One of the first bacteria to colonize our bodies at birth, B. longum has been associated with helping to digest milk and other challenging foods. 28 A placebo-controlled clinical study on 33 children with some digestive discomfort showed that in combination with a gluten-free diet, B. longum not only helped them grow taller but also showed some indications of keeping their immune system strong and balanced.*29 B. longum has also been linked to helping you maintain healthy cholesterol levels.*30

Bifidobacterium lactis - In one eye-opening study, when pre-term babies were given B. lactis after taking antibiotics, they gained an amazing four times as much weight as the babies given the placebo. Bifidobacterium bifidum – A 2015 clinical study published in the British Journal of Nutrition showed B. bifidum helped academically stressed college students make it through the winter semester. The students who took B. bifidum had much fewer absences than the students who didn't take the probiotic. 34 Another clinical study indicates B. bifidum may help with abdominal discomfort, gas and bloating.*35 And a recent randomized placebo-controlled study also showed that B. bifidum can help with stress-related diarrhea.*36 Finally, clinical research published in May, 2016 Journal of Rheumatic Diseases suggests that B. bifidum can help you maintain comfortable joint movement by helping your body manage inflammation.*37
